Frostbiting Results 11/25

Hello Laser Sailors,

We had another fabulous day of Frostbiting on Sunday.   The wind forecast was not very promising but a nice steady 5-8 knot breeze filled in.    A total of 31 boats competed in 5 races.  In a repeat of last weeks performance, Dave Schoene won the day.  He was followed by Bob Tan in second and Gavin O'Hare in third.  Thanks to everyone who came out.  Dave's winners report and full results are below.  Results are also available at http://www.severnsailing.org/fleets/laser/frostbiting/index.shtml

A special thanks to Buck Downes and Matt Lynch for running the mark/ safety boat.

** Notes on scoring - I did create master, women and junior sub-divisions this year just for curiosity's sake.  I did not ask anyone's age at registration so if you are a master (35 or older) or junior and not scored in those catagories please email me and I will correct it.  Also contact me if you finished a race and were not scored.  Thanks.

The series continues next Sunday Dec. 2
Registration 11:30 (registration forms are upstairs in the SSA clubhouse)

Another nice day for Frostbiting….relatively warm and we had enough of a S to SW  breeze to get 5 races in.  We had another good turnout from our junior contingent.

Before launching, the low water level in the basin was very noticeable.  On the course this meant a strong flood which ran along the axis of the W/L course.   This and the veering wind meant the right side was favored all day.  The starting line was pretty square for the most part but the boat end was typically more crowded because of the favored right.  I found that a good start in the middle of the line kept me out of the windward end crowd but still allowed me to be with the leaders at the first mark, although I never rounded in the top three.  On the final approach to the weather mark it definitely paid to overstand a little to compensate for the current and the skipper/boats that tried to cram their way in and in many cases were left fouled on the mark.

Downwind I tried to stay in clear air lanes and separate from other boats as much as possible.  I am a firm believer that sailing in a clump of boats is slow because the mass of sails acts as an obstruction and the wind tends to go above and around the obstruction.  The ability to play the waves and wind angles is also diminished when others are near.  You must also be aware of the direction to the next mark.  When the leeward mark was moved (I think it was for the 3rd race) it seemed like a lot of skippers did not notice and initially sailed in the direction of the old mark location giving up distance.

On the final leg I played the right for each race which seemed to work for the same reasons as mentioned earlier.  In the last couple of races the committee boat end of the line was pretty favored and given the very long line this was amplified even more.  Last week I talked about using ranges for starting but ranges can also be used at the finish line.  In one race I was able to scoop a boat at the last moment by shooting the line.  I knew exactly when to begin the shoot because I could see the same range that I used for the start.

Over the years, I have had my fair share of run ins with the AYC series boats sailing through the course.  I have learned that the best way to negotiate them is to plan well ahead and attempt to stay out of their way even when I have rights over them.  This is especially the case when both fleets are sailing downwind because the speed differences are not that great.  Sometimes it is better to give away a little distance and go behind them rather than being side by side for many yards with neither boat going the way they really want to.  Exert your rights when necessary but think about the big picture as well.

Frostbiting Results 11/18

Hello Laser Sailors,

We had a fabulous first day of Frostbiting on Sunday.   Temps in the 50's with 10-12 knots of breeze.    A total of 26 boats competed in 8 races.  Dave Schoene won the day.  He was followed by Ted Morgan in second and Luke Shingledecker in third.  Thanks to everyone who came out.  Dave's winners report and full results are below.  Results are also available at http://www.severnsailing.org/fleets/laser/frostbiting/index.shtml

A special thanks to Leo Wilson and James McKenna for running the races.

** Note on scoring- I did create master, women and junior sub-divisions this year just for curiosity's sake.  I did not ask anyone's age at registration so if you are a master (35 or older) or junior and not scored in those catagories please email me and I will correct it.  Also contact me if you finished a race and were not scored.  Thanks.

Hope to see you next Sunday... a chance to work off that Turkey day!!

What a great way to start Frostbiting season.  We had a nice breeze with temps in the 50s and a pretty good turnout including 4 or 5 of our junior sailors, most of whom were in Radials.

The wind was out of the NE which typically equates to light and very shifty conditions.  However, on this day the breeze was up in the 10-15 range and though still shifty not as much as I anticipated.   Leo and James did a nice job setting the starting line near the shoal marker and keeping the windward mark away from the Naval Station seawall.  This meant greater velocity and less shifty wind.  The only impact from the AYC frostbite boats was on the final leg, although the timing was pretty good so interference was not too great.

I felt, and a number of individuals confirmed it at the post race socializing, that the fleet was typically late for the starts.  I do not recall a single individual recall in any of the races.  Given that there were all sorts of good ranges at the Naval Academy to use to judge distance from the line the fleet in general should have been closer to the line.  I found that the corner of the green roof large building (the Field House for those familiar with the Yard), a large  American flag, a large blue Navy flag, or the last light pole marking the athletic fields was either a spot on range or a safe range.  Using the appropriate range I always had a good feel for exactly where the line was.   The range did change from race to race so it was important to check it either before or soon after the 2 minute horn.

The first couple of races featured right shifts at the weather mark so it paid to be on the right at the top of the course.  During our second hour of racing the left was favored as the puffs were predominantly lefties.  It was tough sailing upwind because the wind was somewhat unstable and finding the right combination of sail trim and pointing was elusive.  I never felt like I was going as fast as I should have been given the wind strength because it was so tricky.  There were lots of little shifts but I typically waited for the larger ones to come through before tacking.  Current did not seem to be a factor.

On the downwind leg the wind was such that we were not planning but we were at max displacement hull speed.  To me this means sail the shortest distance possible to the next mark and avoid unnecessary zigs and zags.  I slightly favored the right side (looking downwind) to keep free air after rounding the top mark.  My vang was eased so that the mast only had a slight bend.  In the stronger puffs I pulled it on a little but for most of the time it was eased.  I tried to be very conscious of the apparent wind velocity and in the puffs I eased the sail and rolled the boat to windward to put the bow down without using the rudder.  I was always looking for an excuse to sail deeper and towards the mark.  I don't recall every being on port gybe.

The last upwind to the finish was not very long and there were not a lot of passing lanes.  It was a case of rounding the bottom mark and following the boat ahead to the starboard layline and tacking for the finish.  The few times I tried tacking early did not result in gains and I probably lost distance.
