Hello Laser Sailors!

Thanks to everyone who braved frigid temperatures to come out and compete on Sunday. It was warmer than the previously forcasted 25 degrees... a slightly less chilly 31.
Winds were light so that decreased the wind chill factor, but also made for light air sailing... so I guess that is a trade off!

We had 6 races in very fluky conditions. Luke Shingledecker won the day. His report and full results are below. A special thanks to Matt and Dave Schoene for helping me out on the committee boat. Also thanks to Bruce Artman for being the "Fire Master" so we could have a roaring fire to warm us up after racing. This week's raffle winner was Paul Garn. He won a Laser trademark baseball hat provided by APS.

Some of the this week's early forecasts predicted big winds and exceptionally cold temperatures for this Sunday. After weeks of light or no wind, I was hopeful that we would get in a proper day of frostbiting, but those midweek forecasts were looking too cold. Luckily, those forecasts had moderated by this morning. The forecasts I saw were for about 30 degrees and 10-15 knots of wind. Though awfully cold, this was one of those forecasts I've been waiting for. Sadly, it wasn't too be, as half of the river was glassy when I got to SSA.

By 12:30, the wind was looking reasonable, though from the East, instead of the forecast West. 17 sailors bundled up made their way to the race course. We managed to sail six races in light, fluky conditions. I'd say the wind varied between 4 and 8 knots. I managed to win the day with no wins in any individual races. I only rounded a mark in first once, but I was never out of the top 5. So clearly, I won the day on consistency. I think the key to the day was keeping the basics in mind. Sail in the breeze on the lifted tack. The puffs were short in duration, so it sometimes paid to tack more often that one typically would. There was often more wind on the left side (further out in the river), and on most legs, a left shift would come through. This wasn't always the case, and I seemed to be able to keep track of what was happening in time to avoid getting caught on the wrong side.

My upwind speed has been pretty poor in light conditions this year, so I tried to focus on keeping my speed up and sailing the boat flat. In very flat water, you can point the boat quite high by keeping the boat very flat or heeling it a few degrees to weather. You have to keep the speed up while doing this - as soon as you slow down much, you need to bear off slightly and heel the boat slightly to leeward until the speed rebuilds.

Downwind, the usual rules applied. Try to keep air clear, and stay away from other boats as the wind tends to lighten and go around groups of boats. The fleet would often compress as a puff would move down the course. When in front and a lull, there was not much to do here but try to position yourself to maintain an inside overlap at the mark, keep you air clear, or ideally, both.

Thanks to Dave and Matt Schoene, and Dorian. They did a great job of staggering us with the IC's so that no fleet had to wait more than a few minutes between races. This was great, as more than a few of us couldn't feel our fingers or toes.

Laser Frostbiting this Sunday! and boat for sale

Hello Laser sailors!

The SSA Laser Frostbiting series continues this Sunday- Feb. 4. The weather is forcasted to be chilly (high of 25 degrees) with big breeze (20kts). So this one should separate the men from the boys... so to speak. I know many of you have been holding out for a day with big breeze- so hopefully the forcast will hold true!

I am planning on having a roaring fire to warm you up when we hit the dock- and Kieran should have some toasty beverages and soup to warm you up after racing. So don't let the forcast scare you away!

This week's raffle prize is a Laser logo baseball hat provided by APS.

proposed coaching/training event

Hey SSA Laser fleet members,

The Jet 14 fleet has invited us to participate in a slalom speed training event they are planning. The idea is to rig a few boats and take turns competing one on one- working on speed through tacks and gybes. It could be a great opportunity for you speedys to give us newer Laser sailors some great pointers... and an opportunity to socialize with another fleet.

Plan is for a start after lunch... several hours of sailing/ training, followed by a cook out. Proposed dates include the weekend of May 19-20 or June 2-3

Please respond to this if you think this is a good idea. I am looking at your responses to determine interest before I commit to participating.

Miami OCR update

Since you didn't get any frostbite races in last weekend, I thought I would give you a quick glimpse of what the Laser life in Miami looks like this past week.

As many of you know, SSA members Alden Shattuck, Tip Clifton, Bob Tan, and myself (Ted Morgan) are competing in the Laser fleet at the Rolex Miami Olympic Classes Regatta. There are 14 classes represented, comprised of over 850 competitors from close to 50 different countries. To put it bluntly, this event is HUGE. In the Laser fleet alone, there are 114 competitors from over 30 countries.

So what have the conditions been like? Well the first day the breeze was a very comfortable 10-15 knots with full on sun - temps in the 80s (sorry, it's awesome here!). Tuesday and Wednesday saw the breeze fall into the 5-10 knot range - very Chesapeake Bay like conditions which enabled me to have one pretty good finish. Today (Thursday) we saw big breeze - in the 15-20 knot range as a strong cold front pushed south. We should see more of the same tomorrow for the final three races.

When you look at the results you will probably think we've been stinking up the joint as all four of us failed to qualify for the 'gold' fleet, and have been fighting to stay out of the back of the silver fleet. In reality, we've been racing against the best in the world. For those of you who have gone to the midwinters in years past, the competition at this event this year blows the doors off the midwinters.

The boatspeed these folks have off the starting line is phenominal. You have to be on the front row, and you better have your A game ready to roll, otherwise you'll be sucking bad air for the duration of the 60 minute race...there are very few passing lanes at this event.

To sum things up, the four of us are older than almost all the Laser sailors....we are nowhere near the physical shape they are in....but we are fighting hard and hanging tough.

Laser Frostbite update..

Hello Laser sailors.

Those of you who attempted to brave the chilly, snowy day last Sunday already know this... but there was no racing last Sunday Jan 21 due to lack of wind.

Just a reminder there is no Frostbiting this Sunday- Jan 28th due to the IC Midwinters.
