Frostbite series day 2

Hello everyone,

It was a beautiful, unseasonably warm and sunny day yesterday for the second day of our Frostbite series. Despite a forcast for no breeze, there was a steady 6-10 kts from the SE. We had 7 races. The winner of the day was Midshipman Andrew Vann. He finished just ahead of second place Morgan Wilson due to the tiebreaker. Stergios Papadakis was third. The winner of the raffle prize- a tool bag provided by APS, was John Zseleczky. Andrews report and full results are below.

Join us again next week- same time, same place. If you are an SSA fleet 10 member and have not yet volunteered for RC duty please email me- we still have some slots to fill.

See you next Sunday.

Name: Andrew Vann

Regatta: SSA Frostbiting Weekend #2

Conditions (regatta site, boats, sails, etc) There was a light breeze blowing from the South East at 6-10 kts, the current going out of the bay, against the wind, giving you the ability to understand the windward mark a little bit.

What worked: My Starts were really the only contestant part of my race today. With the large fleet today it was important to approach the line a bit earlier than usual; I tried to start my final approach around 45-40 second left. It was imperative that your vang was off allowing you to dump your sail much faster. This fleet has a tendency to line up right next to each other, meaning your mast is in line with the boat to windward of you. When protecting your hole from boats to windward you don’t have to use that much of your boat. I tried to use only my bow to control and hold the boats to windward of me up. This also allows you do a couple things: the first is you can see boats coming in late trying to snake your whole, and the second is you now have that much more room to accelerate. I tried to keep a little speed up through the final 30 second, and would then pull the trigger with 5-6 seconds left.
Upwind I would always sail the long tack first, with the skewed course it was extremely easy to sail to a corner and give you no options. By sailing the long tack first, in today’s case starboard, you are centering yourself up on the course; this gives you more options at the top end of the course, and the ability to play the shifts without sailing to a layline. If you get punked at the start, clear your air, establish a new lane, and check back in with the fleet. By sailing out to the right corner you are hoping for a lift and a puff, and praying you don’t get headed. Out there you can no longer tack and that lift can do little good because you are already so close to the layline.
Downwind I would look behind me often, the puffs were really visible on the water and I just tried to stay in the pressure. I am relatively new in the boat and am still trying to figure out the downwind technique. What I did a lot today was tried to mimic the boats around me that seemed to have decent boat speed off the wind, big thing it seemed were easing off your outhaul much more than I initially figured at the beginning of the afternoon, and then also letting off all your other controls; vang and downhaul

What I learned/Messed Up:
Up at the top end of the course ducking when on port is the right call, by leebowing a starboard tacker you are essentially pinning yourself and have no options. Most often this results in you and the other boat coming into the starboard tack layline extremely close to the two boat length circle, and then ducking packs of boats to get around the mark.
If you feel off speed upwind, just put the bow down and go, don’t try to force height, even if you are giving the boat directly to windward of you a little breathing room, you might be controlling one boat but you are not match racing, and every second you are going slow the rest of the fleet is catching/passing you.

warmer places

Hello Sailor Friends:

As Canada sends down more and more cold air, we may be thinking of warmer places.

The current Laser Sailor lists Cabarete, Dominican Republic, as the venue for the 5th Caribbean
Laser Midwinter Regatta for January 12 -14.

Jane and Mike Schmidt visited there recently for an anniversary and send the great trip Report given
below. Many warm images attached.

Thanks Jane...........Enjoy........Carl

Subject: Laser Sailing in the Dominican Republic: Trip Report

Hello Friends and Family:

First off, I will apologize in advance if you get more than one copy of this as I have more than one address in my address book for many of you and am not sure which ones are correct! I am sending this trip report out along with some pictures attached from our recent trip to the Dominican Republic for our 15th wedding anniversary.

Not having too much time available away from work, we picked a place where we could get to fairly easily and use our American Airline frequent flier miles. After some going back and forth on what we wanted to do, we settled in going to Cabarete in the Dominican Republic. We had some Laser sailing friends who had been there and gave it a big "thumbs up" as well as giving us advice on travel, money exchange etc. Thanks for the tips Lynn and Mike!

Cabarete is located on the northern shore of the DR and is known for windsurfing and for kite surfing and in the past few years also for the site of the Caribbean Mid-Winters Laser Regatta in January as well as being a training center for Laser sailors year around. We left Baltimore early on a Wed. and flew into Puerto Plata DR (plane change in San Juan). Our taxi picked us up and drove us to Cabarete and we were there by 3pm. We stayed at the Hotel Magnifico (www.hotelmagnifico.com) and it was a great choice for us. It was slow season and we were only one of a handful of guests staying on the beautiful oceanfront grounds of this property. The units are actually more like condos with their own kitchens and ours had a rooftop terrace as well as another side balcony, all with wonderful ocean views and breezes. The grounds had beautifully made stone walls and tropical plants and orchids everywere. We were a short walk to a grocery store to by some provisions once we figured out the exchange rate from dollars to pesos.

That afternoon we took the short walk down the beach to the sailing center (www.caribwind.com) and met Andrea who had made all of the arrangements for us. The wind really blows there and we were treated with some spectacular jumps from the kite surfers. Andrea showed us where everything was and we arranged for Mike to have some coaching the next day with Rulo who is from Argentina. The set up is quite nice, right on the beach with lockers for your belongins, fresh water for drinking, beach chairs, hammocks and the EZBar where you could get nice breakfasts and lunches as well as smoothies and other drinks.

Getting back to our room we encountered a friendly cat who ended up spending most of our vacation with us! We even got her some catfood at the store. She was fun and enjoyed being in the room with us and sitting up on the terrace. Not sure what she did during the day while we were gone, but I expect that she was sleeping somewhere or fleecing food off of someone else!

In Cabarete you can walk everywhere and there are tons of places to eat each night. We found the food to be good with interesting selections and not too expensive though on our anniversary night we ate at a restaurant called Otra Cosa and it was superb, special and expensive, but well worth it. We were one of two tables occupied and had a fabulous meal at this special oceanside place.

As for the sailing, Mike went out with Rulo for coaching and they went so far out that you could not even see them anymore. I stayed on the beach reading that day in the shade of the palm trees, swimming when I got too hot and generally relaxing into the Caribbean speed of life. Mike and Rulo came back in a few hours and Mike had a great time, but was exhausted. He learned a lot about sailing in really BIG waves and wind. Rulo was leaving the next day to coach the youth sailing team out of the capiol (Santo Domingo) so we would not see him again.

The next day I got my nerve up and Mike and I went out together. Me on the 4.7 (smallest sail for the Laser) and Mike on the radail (medium sized sail for the Laser). I have never sailed in waves like this before and it was freaking me out. The wind I could handle, but to look behind you when you were going downwind and see waves breaking behind you was scary! I started not looking behind, but then when you are in the trough of the wave with the one that passed you in front of you, that was scary too. We sailed for about an hour and then I felt like I better go in before my good luck ran out. The best thing about sailing there was than either Wilson or Emilio not only rigged your boat, but they derigged it as well. I could get used to that and when Mike and I came in from sailing last weekend I was missing Wilson and Emilio. Mike did some sailing with Ari who owns the sailing center and they had some fun together. I went out the next two days and got more used to the wave action, but never really comfortable. The last day it was windier and gusty too, which was challenging. All in all, it was a blast and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

We loved being there in the off season as there were no crowds. The only drawback of this is that there were more beach vendors than tourists! The food was good, the accomodations were wonderful, the sailing center awesome with Andrea making sure we got whatever it was we needed. The Dominican people were nice as well as interesting. Almost all of them spoke some English and many were fluent. The tourist population was also interesting. A nice mixture of Europeans, South Americans, Canadians and Americans. Even though we were only there 5 nights, it did not seem like a short vacation. We relaxed and got right into the slow mode of things making it the perfect getaway. There are also many other things to do in this area: mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding etc. The DR is a big island and had a much different feel than the other Caribbean island that we have been to; not good or bad, just different.

Hope you enjoyed hearing about the trip and looking at the pictures!

SSA Laser Frostbite results - Week 1

Hello everyone,

Thanks so much for coming out and participating in the first day of our Laser Frostbiting Series! It was a great day to be sailing- and we had a great turn out of 32 boats. Thanks so much to Bob and JR who did a great job as the Race Committee. Luke Shingledecker won the day. His report and full results are below. The raffle prize, a Magic Marine duffle bag provided by APS, went to Fuller Moore.

Please remember- in order to get scored everyone must fill out a registration form at the SSA clubhouse. This is manditory! The policy is as follows -If you have not registered before racing, you do not get scored -The second time you go sailing, if you have not registered you will be sent in to the SSA clubhouse to register before being allowed to sail the course. The forms are available on the table upstairs in the clubhouse and also online at the SSA website.

http://www.severnsailing.org/racemanagement/entryform.pdf

Also- I still need volunteers for RC boat on Dec. 31 and Feb.25 as well as Mark/safety boat on Dec. 31, Feb. 11, Feb.18, Mar. 4, Mar. 11 and Mar. 18. If all SSA members who are frostbiting volunteer one day we will be covered!

Thanks, and I will see you next week!

---------------------------------------------------------

It was a great day for our first day of frostbiting for the 2006-2007 season. Mild temperatures, light-moderate winds, and relatively warm water temps brough out well over 30 boats. It was great to see such a great collection of old and new faces out sailing. Wind was mostly around 6-8 knots, with a couple shots up to 10 knots and sometimes as low as 5 or so. The wind direction was around 300 to 330, with the wind generally clocking to the right through the day.

With a large fleet on a tight line and a short course, it was easy to make mistakes and fall behind the leaders on the first leg.
You could usually see where the first weather puff would be from the start line. This gave me a good idea when there was a good reason to go right or left. Usually it was right, there were always opportunities on both sides of the course. The starts were a key to achieving a consistent finish. I seemed to be able to find a decent spot on the line in most starts. A couple of starts I started at the boat a bit late (second row), which was fine since I was able to tack out and go right. In general, I had a series of good starts where I was able to accelerate quickly off the line and hold a good lane. I find that the start is the primary place where I find myself behind, usually by having a lackluster start. Today, I only had one bad start.

Upwind , the puffs were frequent and the leg was short. As a result, if I could stay on the tack I wanted, it was a pretty easy sail up to the weather mark. The only problems came when I couldn' tack when I wanted, which goes back to the importance of a good start.

Downwind, it seems like there were always a couple of puffs coming down the Severn river, so there was usually some benefit to holding to the left (looking downwind). The only problem was not getting totally caught up in the bad of air from over 20 Lasers coming into the weather mark, pretty much bow to transom. So while gybing immediately, or bearing off well by the lee might have been the quickest way to get out in the river, it would usually leave you choking for breeze. Usually, the best thing was to try and sail down the rhumbline a little bit, not letting any boats behind me get further to the left of me.

Underlining the entire day was a unique factor. There were plenty of leaves floating all over the race course, plus some weeds as well. It seems like every time I checked my rudder, there were always a couple of leaves, if not a lot of them! I saw plenty of boats towing a rake-full of leaves. This was very slow, so it was important to monitor this point.

Overall, I was suprised to do well because I'm heavy and I don't usually sail have boatspeed in light air. I think the difference today was good starts and avoiding bunch-ups at the marks. I seemed to have good speed upwind, and I believe I passed boats because I paid attention to leaves and weeds in the water. When I was behind, I looked for opportunities, to sail into the next windshift or puff.

Thanks to Bob and JR for running the race committee. It was a tough day because the wind was shifting, and they had to deal with a couple of general recalls.
