Frostbiting wrap up- 3/25

Hello Laser Sailors,

So spring had arrived for our last day of the Frostbite series. In fact it almost felt like summer being inside a drysuit on a mild day with very light wind!

We had 4 races.. some very frustrating with the light and variable conditions. Gavin O'Hare won the day. His report is below. Unfortunately I do not have official results yet- my trusty scorer has left the country on a business trip. I will forward the final series results as soon as I get them. The final raffle prize went to Eugenio Cingolani - a blade bag provided by APS.

Thanks everyone for participating! If you made it to 8 or more frostbite days you qualify for this year's participation trophy- an etched pint glass for your favorite frosty beverage!
I will have them with me on openning day and our spring series day April 22- so come find me.

Don't forget to register for the District 11 Championships coming up May 5 and 6!!

NOR is available at http://www.laserdistrict11.org/events/e220

Regatta Report 25 March - Last Frostbite
Breeze started nice then trickled to 0-3 knots and very shift from the N and NE.
Plan your start based on where you the next shift or puff is coming from.

I did not win any races, but narrowly won the day.
Secrets to success:
Heads up sailing. I was constantly looking for the next puff or shift and working to get there.
I also tried to keep the boat moving as fast as possible at all times.
I would keep the mainsheet eased until up to max speed then pull tighter to get more height, keeping the boat flat.

I really enjoyed sailing with the fleet.
Thanks for the competition.
Hope to see you on the water in the summer!
Best regards,

Gavin O'Hare

Frostbiting wrap-up 3/18 - LAST FROSTBITE THIS SUNDAY!

Hello Laser Sailors!

It was another chilly and breezy day last Sunday. Eleven brave diehard Laser sailors braved the frigid temps and blustery wind. It was very exciting racing! Dave Schoene won the day. His report is below. I will have full results for you next week. Luke Shingledecker won the raffle prize, a Laser baseball hat provided by APS.

This Sunday is the last day of Frostbiting. You need to have competed 8 days out of the 16 day season to qualify for scoring. Everyone who has participated for 8 days receives a trophy and the trophies are in!!(etched pint glasses)... so if you qualify see me on Sunday after racing!

Thanks to everyone who participated in the Laser Frostbite Series this season. Now spring is here and we can think about warmer sailing!!!

Don't Forget ---- Laser District 11 Championships will be held at SSA May 5-6.

Also- below is a request for a Laser instructor for a camp on the Magothy this summer.

See you on Sunday!

____________________________________________________

Another breezy day. Probably the windiest in terms of sustained velocity that we have sailed in quite a while. It was cold but, at least for me, I was so active in the boat that I didn't notice the chill. Over the last four to five weeks we have had good breeze and I think all participants have learned a lot and significantly improved their game.

The courses were not particularly long but it was shifty enough that lots of gains and losses could me made. After one windward-leeward course we sailed triangles for the rest of the day. There were some great rides on the second reach. In particular there was a blast that came through in one race that held for the entire leg. I was hiking off the aft deck as far back as I could and just hanging on. The forward two thirds of the boat must have been out of the water. Spray was everywhere. I have no idea how fast I was going but it must have been in the teens.

After the races I was asked about control line management. I dead end the vang, outhaul and cunningham to the handle on my centerboard. My handle consist of a piece of old mainsheet that is lead through a hole in the board and whipped together with twine to essentially form a post (approx 6") that sticks straight up. I believe all boards have a dimple molded in for the purpose of drilling through. The outhaul and cunningham are led through a small triangular hole formed between the top of the centerboard and the point where the whipping starts. This hole is small enough that a simple figure eight knot holds these two lines in place. For the vang I tie a loop on the free end and place it over the rope post. Luke stated that he ties all three to the front of the board where the shock cord attaches.

Before the start I preset the cunnigham and outhaul. Prior to my final approach to the line I tension the vang part way to facilitate easy tacking and gibing and make sure that the vang line is laying on the starboard deck. Ideally at about ten seconds before the start, the vang goes on the rest of the way. However, if I am fighting to maintain my line space, this does not always happen. But once started and the mainsheet is tensioned it is easy to reach for the vang and snug it up with a quick lean in from the hiking position. It is helpful during the course of the beat to get the vang line back on the starboard side so that it can be easily grabbed and eased during the final starboard approach to the weather mark. Prior to the leeward mark I put the vang line on the port side so that I can tighten it up after rounding and sheeting in the main.

Generally I rig the cunningham so that the single line that goes through the grommet comes up on the port side of the boom and ties to the purchase on the starboard side. With port roundings having the purchase on the starboard side seems to work best, especially in light air. We typically start the first downwind leg on starboard, so in light air when the cunningham needs a little assistance to loosen up it is easy to get to it. In heavy air I rig the whole assembly on the starboard side of the boom which allows me to get the cunningham on a little tighter. Hope this helps at least a few of you. Dave

The Magothy River Sailing Association is looking for an instructor to
run a week long Laser racing clinic, either the week of June 18th or
June 29th. The clinic would run Monday through Friday, from a location
here on the Magothy River near Gibson Island.

If anyone knows of a Laser sailor that would be interested in coaching
some 12-15 year old sailors on their Laser racing skills, please email
or give me a call soonest possible. This is a paid position (!) and
does not require US Sailing credentials, they are looking for an
experienced Laser sailor to help jump start these juniors in the boat.

thanks in advance for your help!

Mike Schmidt

Frostbiting wrap-up 3/11 and more...

Hello Laser Sailors!

It was a beautiful sunny spring-like day on Sunday. Nice breeze, relatively flat water... a perfect day for Laser sailing!
We had a turn out of 20 boats for total of eight races on Sunday. Thanks to Luke and Susan Shingledecker for running the committee boat and to Leo Wilson for running the mark boat.

Dave Schoene won the day. His report and full results are below. Matt Schoene won the raffle prize, a Magic Marine tool bag provided by APS.

Only two more frostbiting days left!! See you next Sunday- that is if you are not participating in the Capital City Regatta.

WANTED: a Radial bottom section/sail - please forward information to Erika Seamon. eseamon@yahoo.com

Today was the kind of day that reinforces why we race sailboats. Sunny, warm (at least for frostbiting), and a nice 12-14 kt NNW breeze. Some of the puffs were in the high teens but they didn't last too long. And oh yea, the racing was close and really fun!

The ICs were not out today and the course was a little longer than normal which was nice. We had a long starting line so there was plenty of room. Occasionally a right shift would come through favoring the windward end but for the most part the line was square. It was very easy to identify a starting line range using the houses lining Horn Point. I used a house with a green roof as a safe range that was very easy to pick out. This particular range was good for at least the last four races. Based on this range and boat positions around me , I believe that few of us were on the line when the gun started. My recollection is that there was only one individual recall the entire day.

I guess I'm not sure where the Severn River "officially" ends, and the Bay begins, but I always think of the river extending to the Spider buoy. So to me, our course was set up pretty much in the middle of the river with the leeward mark in the vicinity of the day marker. The wind direction was such that the centerline of the course was very near the 6 kt buoy line that approximates the outline of the shoal to the West and the deeper water in the channel to the East. With the predicted high tide at 1139 the ebb was in full force sometime between 1 and 3 pm. In hindsight (if only I could figure things out in real time) I believe the ebb current had a larger impact on tactics than most competitors, including me, accounted for. The current would also partially explain why we were late to the starting line.

The first couple of races were about boat speed as the wind was relatively stable in direction and velocity (and less current to deal with). About the third race it seemed to get shiftier and puffier and the current probably started running a little faster. Overall I tended to play the middle left most of the day. When I got beat up it seemed to be from boats on the left. There were good starboard angles but the left boats always seemed to come out OK (less current in the shoals?). The difference between the lulls and puffs were in excess on 5 kts so I quite frequently adjusted my control lines to change gears as the breeze increased or decreased.

I do know that downwind it paid to sail low. It seemed like there was more velocity, the waves were a little bigger and the current was probably stronger. When I sailed low I made gains, and when I didn't, those to the left of me gained. The separation wasn't that great (a couple of hundred feet at most) but the difference was noticeable. When sailing low, if all you did was to hold even with the boats to weather, at the end you could heat it up for the final approach to the mark which created the separation.

On the last leg it again paid to work the left side even though there were good starboard angles to be had on the right, which reinforces my belief that the current on the right side of the course centerline was different enough to impact speed made good to windward.

Lastly, it is great to see more people using Radial rigs. A well sailed Radial in breeze above 12 kts is very close in speed to a Full rig. Last week Bob Tan finished second overall using a Radial rig and today, Bo McClatchy won a race and finished second in another. I am a member of the Junior Program Board of Governors at SSA and one of my goals is to get more of our junior Laser sailors out for our regular season weekend events. Most of these kids will be sailing Radials. With a little bit of luck maybe we can generate a large enough group to warrant a separate start. So if you feel uncomfortable with a Full rig when it gets breezy, maybe it is worth trying out a Radial.

Dave

Fleet 10 stuff...

Hey SSA laser fleet members

Just a few fleet business things...

Frostbiting RC duty- I need a volunteer for the mark boat on March 18.

We are hosting the District 11 Championships May 5-6. I am still looking for a Housing Coordinator. All that is required is collecting names and email address for Fleet 10 members with space for visiting sailors and getting them in contact with people who request housing.

Fleet dues for 2007 are $30- thank you to all those who have already paid.

I am looking forward to seeing you all this Laser sailing season!

-Dorian

Frostbite wrap-up 3/4

Hello Laser sailors!

It was another breezy frostbiting day... and 15 brave sailors rigged up and went out into the frosty waters. It was very exciting racing and a great opportunity to put that Boat Whisper video to use! Luke Shingledecker won the day. His report and full results are below. Bob Tan won the raffle prize- a Laser baseball cap provided by APS.

We have 3 more frostbiting days left! See you next Sunday.

____________________________________________________

It was one of those crazy days that represent (at least for me), "real" frostbiting. Winds were from the northwest in the mid to upper teens and air temperatures in the upper 30's. By the way, the water is also around 37-38 degrees right now. The most important characteristic of today's sailing was the puffiness and shiftiness of the breeze.

We completed 6 races, with 15 sailors racing or attempting to race. It was a tricky day to be out there, and nobody wants to go swimming, so there's no shame in waiting for slightly warmer temperatures. At least the sailing was better today than two weeks ago, when the wind was even more variable and the air temperatures were just below freezing.

The strategy for the day was being conservative with my boathandling. I figured I'd rather get passed by being careful than capsize and lose lots of places and risk a bitter swim. The legs were short enough that I never eased off my sail controls downwind. The cunningham was so tight that half of the tack grommet was overlapped with the boom. The outhaul was relatively tight but not so tight that there wasn't some fullness in the sail. Before the start, I sailed with the vang well eased so that I could bear off when necessary, either to avoid another boat or to get the bow down without accelarating. Its easy to get caught in irons when the wind is strong, so the goal right before the start is to have some runway to leeward, and to have the bow pointed below a close-hauled course, so that I could accelerate quickly and easily, just before the gun. I would pull the vang on hard as I got the boat up to speed, or right after I had the boat up to speed if the line wasn't close at hand.

I believe that Dave went over the important points of sailing upwind in these conditions two weeks ago - don't pinch the boat, and sail with the sheet eased a bit. Lots of vang is required to keep the sail flat when the sail is eased out. So much vang is required that sometimes I remind myself while tacking that my head needs to be almost on the deck to make sure that my lifejacket doesn't catch the boom, which would end in a capsize almost every time. Hiking, steering, and sheet action are required to keep the boat nearly vertical. Its very slow when you get hit by a puff and heel over 30 degrees - you just go sideways. Also, by footing you keep your speed up, which helps in a big puff. If you aren't moving forwards, then the board can't generate the side force necessary to counteract the sails. Finally, when its this windy and you are footing a bit anyway, its okay for the board to be up a few inches from the max down position. This will actually reduce the vertical height between the sail's center of effort and the underwater center of lift. This reduces the heeling moment. If you want to point high and sheet on, the board needs to be all the way down again.

The wind oscillated back and forth through a rather large range, often a couple times per leg. With the small fleet, I could usually stay on the lifted tack and I seemed to make gains upwind in the windshifts.

We were sailing triangles, and part of being conservative was making sure I didn't break anything. At the windward mark, this meant getting the vang well off before bearing off to the first reach. Having the vang on very hard on a reach is one way to bend or break your rig. With the short legs, I tried mostly to play it safe, which sometimes did cost me places. The first reach was always fairly tight, but the second reach was almost always quite deep. I sometimes avoided danger by sailing by the lee (on starboard tack) after the gybe mark, for up to half the leg. I sailed a little more distance doing this, but I avoided a port tack broad reach, which I consider the least safe angle to sail when the wind shifts are large. By coming into the leeward mark at a hotter (faster) angle, I was able to make up most of what I lost on the first part of the leg.

Last leg was all about getting the boat in upwind gear quickly and sailing on the lifted tack. I often passed boats upwind that had passed me downwind. Its probably didn't hurt that I'm a bit heavy these days and that the races were short enough that my legs didn't get too tired in each race.

Overall, I kept the boat upright all day and made few bad mistakes, which kept my scores up through the day. Just a few more days of frostbiting left! I hope the weather warms up a bit and everybody can make it out a few more times before the spring!

Luke
