Attention Annapolis area laser sailors…

Annapolis Performance Sailing would like to extend a discount to the Annapolis Laser fleet for the purchase of new laser sails. These sails retail for $507.40 and the discount would be as follows….

There will be a discount of 10% if there are at least 5 people interested.

Once we get 10 sails, the discount goes up to 15%.

After 20+ sails, there is a 20% discount off each sail. That means brand new laser sails are $405.92 (a saving of $100+).

These sails come with sail numbers and we can have this order together in time for Laser Midwinters.

If you would like to be involved in this purchase, let Dorian know. Once we get a firm number, we can give everyone a price and start collecting.

Several fleet members were asking about the funky colored water in the river yesterday. I haven't seen any reports of local "spills", so a likely culprit is that an algae bloom is occurring in the Severn River, resulting in what is often termed a "mahagony tide" (usually noticed in summer). If so, the discoloration was probably due to a super-elevated density of single-celled organisms called dinoflagellates. There are several species of these organisms that are observed every year in the Bay, none of which have been reported to be acutely toxic to humans via water contact. However, the blooms have been found to coincide with low oxygen in the water column, fish kills, and shellfish mortality. Since they have characteristics of both plants and animals, their population "booms" may be influenced by elevated concentrations of nutrients. So, things like problems with the Back Creek wastewater plant, malfunctioning septic systems, and lawn fertilizers can be problematic sources of nutrients, which may have a role in generating the blooms. The same sort of thing applies for the rest of the Bay as well.

Here's are related web links.

Frostbiting wrap-up 12/17 -no racing next week

Hello Laser Sailors.

It was another fabulous, warm day to be sailing yesterday. We almost should not be calling it Frostbite! The breeze died off after 4 races. Jason Currie won the day. His report and full results are below. The corrected results from Nov. 26 will be available on the fleet 10 website.

The raffle prize, a pair of Magic Marine hiking pants, went to Sean Smith.

Have you noticed the breeze has been lighter on Sundays?- turns out that is a real trend- Doug Wilson at NOAA forwarded me the average wind speed data from Thomas Point Light- see below.

******Reminder***** No Racing next week******

***********Merry Christmas!!****************

See you all on Dec. 31 - we will say goodbye to 2006 with some great Laser Frostbite racing! Kieran has a very special surprise for us as well- fabulous hot dogs imported from New Jersey. Nothing says New Years like great hot dogs- come on out and join the fun!!

With the forecast the way it was, I had to go sailing. Problem was, I don't own a boat any more so with the generosity of Nick von der wense & Scott Nixon I could scrap together a boat and be on the water in time for the 1pm start.
The forecast of 10-15 knots didn't really eventuate although a steady 8-12 out of the SE was perfect for 4 good races. The current was ripping in pretty hard so you had to start at the RC boat and tack straight away. I did this every race. I never tried to win the boat end as that can lead to disaster and being locked out from tacking. I did however make sure I had the ability to tack straight away and if this meant starting a few seconds late that was fine.
Upwind setup was very loose, slack out of the vang loose cunningham and about 10 inches of outhaul ease at mid boom.
Downwind I spent more time looking back for breeze than looking forward. This is pretty key to doing well, keeping your head out of the boat is crucial. There were a lot of gains to make downwind by keeping an eye on the pressure and maintaining clear air. Staying still and patient is key in the lighter spots, something I'm not too good at but trying hard to work on!
The courses were set well, good length to them and there were plenty of opportunities to pass on the last beat. The last race of the day the breeze shut off on the right side so the question was, go left into current for pressure or go right out of the current into no breeze at all. It was a no brainer; breeze will always win out so ignore the current and go for the pressure.
I was using a Hyde sail and these are definitely different to the North sails. If anyone is thinking of buying one of these sails and has questions, I would be more than happy to provide some good info on the differences.

Cheers,
Jason

SSA Laser Frostbite wrap up 12/10

Hello everyone,

It was another beautiful Sunday afternoon to be sailing yesterday. It was sunny and unseasonably warm, with a variety of wind conditions. We had another fabulous turnout- 39 boats. (only 36 of which were registered- remember EVERYONE MUST REGISTER- no excuses. You must be registered to be scored. If you do not register you will be asked to leave the course)

Thanks to John Quay, Jen Cook and J Bergquist for doing a great job on the committee and mark boat. Ted Morgan won the day. His report and full results below. Raffle prize (a harken tool bag donated by APS) went to Greg Leonard.

***Check out the cool photo website/blog set up by Tip Clifton. He is adding photos and videos every week.

http://web.mac.com/tip_clifton/iWeb/Site/Blog/Blog.html

*** note*** When looking at the results, there was a mishap with the scoring for the 3rd race. All the boats that were mistakenly not scored have been given redress. If you know where you finished please email Luke at luke@farrdesign.com

***also*** Please remember to abide by the Racing Rules of Sailing. If you foul someone- please do the right thing and exonerate yourself by doing a penalty turn (only a 360 degree turn is required for Frostbiting).

Thank you- see you next Sunday!

Dorian

---------------------------------------------------------
Let me start off by saying that it has been awesome watching this fleet grow over the past 15 years. Can you believe that there were 39 boats out there this weekend – wow. Past Commodore John Quay, Jen Cook, and J Bergquist did a really nice job running the races, thank you! They did a lot of little things behind the scenes (like shortening the finish line) that made for better racing.

There are three reasons why I have the honor of writing this week's report.

I successfully filled out my registration form. If you don't register you don't get scored. It's that simple.
I successfully completed all six races yesterday. When the breeze looked pretty weak after the 5th race a lot of folks bailed and went in. That took a few contenders out of the picture.
I successfully banged the right corner (looking downwind) on the leeward leg of the last two races. I will explain this pathetic tactic later.

Believe it or not, behind this simplistic explanation there was actually a little bit of thought put into the decisions I made on the race course yesterday. They certainly weren't always the right decisions but for once everything seemed to line up for me.

STARTING: I started at the pin every single race yesterday. This was a good thing in the first two races as I felt the pin was slightly favored. However, as the day progressed the committee boat was clearly the favored end (closest to the windward mark). So why did I continue to start at the pin? I wanted clear air and low stress so I got as far away from the pack as I could. With the I flag up an OCS was going to kill my score for the day. I'm not going to win many races starting at the wrong end of the line, but I had faith in my boat speed being pretty good. I wasn't looking to s core the bullet in every race, I just wanted to get consistent top 10 finishes. I also felt that there was better pressure on the left side of the course. Having said all this, my point is that my formula wasn't the best – there are a number of different ways to succeed

UPWIND: The courses were really short yesterday. The first race took just 9 minutes to complete so there was a premium on getting off the starting line with clear air and limiting your tacks. In almost every race I only tacked twice on the first leg.

DOWNWIND: With so many boats compressed on such a short course I felt that it was really important to get out on a corner downwind immediately after rounding the windward mark. In the first couple of races I tried the left corner (looking downwind) and watched the folks in the middle fade due to the blanket effect 39 boats has on the fleet, and then those on the right/Severn River side smoke past me. I figured there must be better pressure over there, so in races 5 and 6 I switched sides – a crucial decision. In both of those races the breeze had shut down inside the shoal pole, but hung on in the middle of the River. I think I passed 10 boats downwind in both of those races because I had slightly more pressure and I was getting pushed by the powerboat chop more than the others inside of me. In the really light stuff when your sailing with the boom out past 90 degrees, put a little more outhaul on then you might normally think is correct. You want the wind to flow across your sail … you don't want it to look like a spinnaker, so don't let it out an outrageous amount in the light stuff. Also, put a little vang on instead of letting if off completely. Depending on where your vang stop knot is located you may be letting it out entirely too far. Putting a little vang on will encoura ge your leach to snap every time you bounce on a wave, which is very fast. Again, this is only good in the light stuff. Generally you want vang off up but not past the point of being so squirrely that you capsize.

RIG SETUP: I'm going to guess it was blowing 5-10 knots yesterday with very slight chop. Keep in mind that I weigh 172 pounds when comparing rig settings. I had no vang on upwind yesterday. My cuningham was on upwind – just enough to get the worst wrinkles out of the sail – and completely off downwind. I can't accurately describe my outhaul setting. What I can tell you is that for 14 years I tried to guess where the outhaul should be by unscientifically placing my hand between the boom and the foot of the sail. Last year I finally snapped out of it and put measurement markings on my boom - a trick I picked up from Jason Currie . It's so simple to do and it eliminates the guesswork. Stop by and I'll show you what I've done. All you need to do is make sure your outhaul knots are tied in the same spot each time you go sailing.

CLOSING THOUGHTS: Hydrate. Even though it is cold you still need to drink plenty of fluid. Make a conscious decision to fill up the tank a few hours before you go sailing, and always bring a water bottle with you. As it gets colder over the next few weeks, make sure you get the water out of your mast step at the end of the day. If you've got question give me a shout at LaserFleet10@yahoo.com. I'd be happy to elaborate on any of this.

Ted

Laser Frostbiting report- 12/3

Hello Laser Sailors,

It was another beautiful afternoon for Laser sailing yesterday. South winds 5-8 knots. We had another great turnout- 28 boats total. The winner of the day was Morgan Wilson- her report is below. Dave Schoene was in second and Patrick Kana placed third. Quinn Tobin was the winner of this week's raffle prize- a Magic Marine backpack provided by APS.

There have been some corrections to last weeks scores- updated scores will be available on the fleet 10 website.

We will be sailing again next week- same time, same place- please come out and join the fun!

---------------------------------------------------------
Sunday December 3rd 2006
Wind: South at 5-8 knots

In the beginning of the day the race course was very puffy and it was important to have clear air and get a good start. I tried to find the puffs before the race and pick which side I wanted to be on. Every race was different today. I had to change my gameplan every race which was a change from the last few weeks. I was kind of confused after the first race and realized this. One start today was very pin favored and it was important to get to the pin and start on port tack as soon as possible. This helped me because I had an immediate advantage over about half of the fleet. The most important thing about today was to keep your head out of the boat and tack on any shift that was substantial. Downwind it was important to have your boom out past 90 degrees and heel the boat. Another important thing about downwind was clear air and staying in the puffs so that you could sail past people who were not in puffs. The last race of the day I caught about eight boats because I caught
a large right shift on the last beat, while every one else was on the left side. Overall today was kind of a day of luck but it also required some understanding of what the heck was happening.

Laser frostbiting - will you be one of 30 this Sunday?

We've had two Sundays with over 30 boats racing- will you be one of them this Sunday? Don't miss the December sailing - its some of the most competitive sailing we get all year, but it doesn't require a committment of an entire day.

Everyone must register, no excuses. You can register by faxing in an SSA registration form, or by showing up at SSA between 12 and 12:20. You only have to register once for the year, so if you've already done so, just show up on the line by 1 PM!

Finally - if you are frostbiting this winter and haven't signed up for a race committee day, what are you waiting for? Contact Dorian right away (reply to this email). Our series depends upon volunteers for race committee, so step up, or we can't race!

Finally, Hobart college is selling its 2000 (year) Lasers. Dollies are included for $2000 each. If interested, contact Scott Ikle at ikle@hws.edu

See you all at frostbiting!
-Luke

SSA Laser Frostbite- this Sunday

Hello Frostbiters!

It is so warm outside these days it seems wrong to call it Frostbite- but word is it will turn colder again this weekend. Week 3 of the SSA Laser frostbite series is this Sunday.

Registration at 12:00pm, First race at 1:00pm

There will be another raffle and all participants are eligible. This week's prize is a Magic Marine Backpack- provided generously by APS.

Come on out and join the fun!

PS- those SSA fleet members who have not signed up for RC duty- please contact me. We need to fill the slots to keep this series going. There are more slots to fill this year so I ask that every SSA member sailing frostbite participate. If you are not available on the dates that are open let me know and I can try and shuffle people around. The current schedule is available on the website-

Frostbite series day 2

Hello everyone,

It was a beautiful, unseasonably warm and sunny day yesterday for the second day of our Frostbite series. Despite a forcast for no breeze, there was a steady 6-10 kts from the SE. We had 7 races. The winner of the day was Midshipman Andrew Vann. He finished just ahead of second place Morgan Wilson due to the tiebreaker. Stergios Papadakis was third. The winner of the raffle prize- a tool bag provided by APS, was John Zseleczky. Andrews report and full results are below.

Join us again next week- same time, same place. If you are an SSA fleet 10 member and have not yet volunteered for RC duty please email me- we still have some slots to fill.

See you next Sunday.

-Dorian

------------------------------------------------------

Name: Andrew Vann

Regatta: SSA Frostbiting Weekend #2

Conditions (regatta site, boats, sails, etc) There was a light breeze blowing from the South East at 6-10 kts, the current going out of the bay, against the wind, giving you the ability to understand the windward mark a little bit.

What worked: My Starts were really the only contestant part of my race today. With the large fleet today it was important to approach the line a bit earlier than usual; I tried to start my final approach around 45-40 second left. It was imperative that your vang was off allowing you to dump your sail much faster. This fleet has a tendency to line up right next to each other, meaning your mast is in line with the boat to windward of you. When protecting your hole from boats to windward you don’t have to use that much of your boat. I tried to use only my bow to control and hold the boats to windward of me up. This also allows you do a couple things: the first is you can see boats coming in late trying to snake your whole, and the second is you now have that much more room to accelerate. I tried to keep a little speed up through the final 30 second, and would then pull the trigger with 5-6 seconds left.
Upwind I would always sail the long tack first, with the skewed course it was extremely easy to sail to a corner and give you no options. By sailing the long tack first, in today’s case starboard, you are centering yourself up on the course; this gives you more options at the top end of the course, and the ability to play the shifts without sailing to a layline. If you get punked at the start, clear your air, establish a new lane, and check back in with the fleet. By sailing out to the right corner you are hoping for a lift and a puff, and praying you don’t get headed. Out there you can no longer tack and that lift can do little good because you are already so close to the layline.
Downwind I would look behind me often, the puffs were really visible on the water and I just tried to stay in the pressure. I am relatively new in the boat and am still trying to figure out the downwind technique. What I did a lot today was tried to mimic the boats around me that seemed to have decent boat speed off the wind, big thing it seemed were easing off your outhaul much more than I initially figured at the beginning of the afternoon, and then also letting off all your other controls; vang and downhaul

What I learned/Messed Up:
Up at the top end of the course ducking when on port is the right call, by leebowing a starboard tacker you are essentially pinning yourself and have no options. Most often this results in you and the other boat coming into the starboard tack layline extremely close to the two boat length circle, and then ducking packs of boats to get around the mark.
If you feel off speed upwind, just put the bow down and go, don’t try to force height, even if you are giving the boat directly to windward of you a little breathing room, you might be controlling one boat but you are not match racing, and every second you are going slow the rest of the fleet is catching/passing you.

SSA Laser Frostbite- results week 2

Name: Andrew Vann

Regatta: SSA Frostbiting Weekend #2

Conditions (regatta site, boats, sails, etc)
There was a light breeze blowing from the South East at 6-10 kts, the current going out of the bay, against the wind, giving you the ability to understand the windward mark a little bit.

When protecting your hole from boats to windward you don't have to use that much of your boat.
By sailing the long tack first, in today's case starboard, you are centering yourself up on the course; this gives you more options at the top end of the course, and the ability to play the shifts without sailing to a layline. If you get punked at the start, clear your air, establish a new lane, and check back in with the fleet. By sailing out to the right corner you are hoping for a lift and a puff, and praying you don't get headed.

If you feel off speed upwind, just put the bow down and go, don't try to force height, even if you are giving the boat directly to windward of you a little breathing room, you might be controlling one boat but you are not match racing, and every second you are going slow the rest of the fleet is catching/passing you.

warmer places

Hello Sailor Friends:

As Canada sends down more and more cold air, we may be thinking of warmer places.

The current Laser Sailor lists Cabarete, Dominican Republic, as the venue for the 5th Caribbean
Laser Midwinter Regatta for January 12 -14.

Jane and Mike Schmidt visited there recently for an anniversary and send the great trip Report given
below. Many warm images attached.

Thanks Jane...........Enjoy........Carl

Subject: Laser Sailing in the Dominican Republic: Trip Report

Hello Friends and Family:

First off, I will apologize in advance if you get more than one copy of this as I have more than one address in my address book for many of you and am not sure which ones are correct! I am sending this trip report out along with some pictures attached from our recent trip to the Dominican Republic for our 15th wedding anniversary.

Not having too much time available away from work, we picked a place where we could get to fairly easily and use our American Airline frequent flier miles. After some going back and forth on what we wanted to do, we settled in going to Cabarete in the Dominican Republic. We had some Laser sailing friends who had been there and gave it a big "thumbs up" as well as giving us advice on travel, money exchange etc. Thanks for the tips Lynn and Mike!

Cabarete is located on the northern shore of the DR and is known for windsurfing and for kite surfing and in the past few years also for the site of the Caribbean Mid-Winters Laser Regatta in January as well as being a training center for Laser sailors year around. We left Baltimore early on a Wed. and flew into Puerto Plata DR (plane change in San Juan). Our taxi picked us up and drove us to Cabarete and we were there by 3pm. We stayed at the Hotel Magnifico (www.hotelmagnifico.com) and it was a great choice for us. It was slow season and we were only one of a handful of guests staying on the beautiful oceanfront grounds of this property. The units are actually more like condos with their own kitchens and ours had a rooftop terrace as well as another side balcony, all with wonderful ocean views and breezes. The grounds had beautifully made stone walls and tropical plants and orchids everywere. We were a short walk to a grocery store to by some provisions once we figured out the exchange rate from dollars to pesos.

That afternoon we took the short walk down the beach to the sailing center (www.caribwind.com) and met Andrea who had made all of the arrangements for us. The wind really blows there and we were treated with some spectacular jumps from the kite surfers. Andrea showed us where everything was and we arranged for Mike to have some coaching the next day with Rulo who is from Argentina. The set up is quite nice, right on the beach with lockers for your belongins, fresh water for drinking, beach chairs, hammocks and the EZBar where you could get nice breakfasts and lunches as well as smoothies and other drinks.

Getting back to our room we encountered a friendly cat who ended up spending most of our vacation with us! We even got her some catfood at the store. She was fun and enjoyed being in the room with us and sitting up on the terrace. Not sure what she did during the day while we were gone, but I expect that she was sleeping somewhere or fleecing food off of someone else!

In Cabarete you can walk everywhere and there are tons of places to eat each night. We found the food to be good with interesting selections and not too expensive though on our anniversary night we ate at a restaurant called Otra Cosa and it was superb, special and expensive, but well worth it. We were one of two tables occupied and had a fabulous meal at this special oceanside place.

As for the sailing, Mike went out with Rulo for coaching and they went so far out that you could not even see them anymore. I stayed on the beach reading that day in the shade of the palm trees, swimming when I got too hot and generally relaxing into the Caribbean speed of life. Mike and Rulo came back in a few hours and Mike had a great time, but was exhausted. He learned a lot about sailing in really BIG waves and wind. Rulo was leaving the next day to coach the youth sailing team out of the capiol (Santo Domingo) so we would not see him again.

The next day I got my nerve up and Mike and I went out together. Me on the 4.7 (smallest sail for the Laser) and Mike on the radail (medium sized sail for the Laser). I have never sailed in waves like this before and it was freaking me out. The wind I could handle, but to look behind you when you were going downwind and see waves breaking behind you was scary! I started not looking behind, but then when you are in the trough of the wave with the one that passed you in front of you, that was scary too. We sailed for about an hour and then I felt like I better go in before my good luck ran out. The best thing about sailing there was than either Wilson or Emilio not only rigged your boat, but they derigged it as well. I could get used to that and when Mike and I came in from sailing last weekend I was missing Wilson and Emilio. Mike did some sailing with Ari who owns the sailing center and they had some fun together. I went out the next two days and got more used to the wave action, but never really comfortable. The last day it was windier and gusty too, which was challenging. All in all, it was a blast and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

We loved being there in the off season as there were no crowds. The only drawback of this is that there were more beach vendors than tourists! The food was good, the accomodations were wonderful, the sailing center awesome with Andrea making sure we got whatever it was we needed. The Dominican people were nice as well as interesting. Almost all of them spoke some English and many were fluent. The tourist population was also interesting. A nice mixture of Europeans, South Americans, Canadians and Americans. Even though we were only there 5 nights, it did not seem like a short vacation. We relaxed and got right into the slow mode of things making it the perfect getaway. There are also many other things to do in this area: mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding etc. The DR is a big island and had a much different feel than the other Caribbean island that we have been to; not good or bad, just different.

Hope you enjoyed hearing about the trip and looking at the pictures!

Jane and Mike

SSA Laser Frostbite results - Week 1

Hello everyone,

Thanks so much for coming out and participating in the first day of our Laser Frostbiting Series! It was a great day to be sailing- and we had a great turn out of 32 boats. Thanks so much to Bob and JR who did a great job as the Race Committee. Luke Shingledecker won the day. His report and full results are below. The raffle prize, a Magic Marine duffle bag provided by APS, went to Fuller Moore.

Please remember- in order to get scored everyone must fill out a registration form at the SSA clubhouse. This is manditory! The policy is as follows -If you have not registered before racing, you do not get scored -The second time you go sailing, if you have not registered you will be sent in to the SSA clubhouse to register before being allowed to sail the course. The forms are available on the table upstairs in the clubhouse and also online at the SSA website.

http://www.severnsailing.org/racemanagement/entryform.pdf

Also- I still need volunteers for RC boat on Dec. 31 and Feb.25 as well as Mark/safety boat on Dec. 31, Feb. 11, Feb.18, Mar. 4, Mar. 11 and Mar. 18. If all SSA members who are frostbiting volunteer one day we will be covered!

Thanks, and I will see you next week!

---------------------------------------------------------

It was a great day for our first day of frostbiting for the 2006-2007 season. Mild temperatures, light-moderate winds, and relatively warm water temps brough out well over 30 boats. It was great to see such a great collection of old and new faces out sailing. Wind was mostly around 6-8 knots, with a couple shots up to 10 knots and sometimes as low as 5 or so. The wind direction was around 300 to 330, with the wind generally clocking to the right through the day.

With a large fleet on a tight line and a short course, it was easy to make mistakes and fall behind the leaders on the first leg.
You could usually see where the first weather puff would be from the start line. This gave me a good idea when there was a good reason to go right or left. Usually it was right, there were always opportunities on both sides of the course. The starts were a key to achieving a consistent finish. I seemed to be able to find a decent spot on the line in most starts. A couple of starts I started at the boat a bit late (second row), which was fine since I was able to tack out and go right. In general, I had a series of good starts where I was able to accelerate quickly off the line and hold a good lane. I find that the start is the primary place where I find myself behind, usually by having a lackluster start. Today, I only had one bad start.

Upwind , the puffs were frequent and the leg was short. As a result, if I could stay on the tack I wanted, it was a pretty easy sail up to the weather mark. The only problems came when I couldn' tack when I wanted, which goes back to the importance of a good start.

Downwind, it seems like there were always a couple of puffs coming down the Severn river, so there was usually some benefit to holding to the left (looking downwind). The only problem was not getting totally caught up in the bad of air from over 20 Lasers coming into the weather mark, pretty much bow to transom. So while gybing immediately, or bearing off well by the lee might have been the quickest way to get out in the river, it would usually leave you choking for breeze. Usually, the best thing was to try and sail down the rhumbline a little bit, not letting any boats behind me get further to the left of me.

Underlining the entire day was a unique factor. There were plenty of leaves floating all over the race course, plus some weeds as well. It seems like every time I checked my rudder, there were always a couple of leaves, if not a lot of them! I saw plenty of boats towing a rake-full of leaves. This was very slow, so it was important to monitor this point.

Overall, I was suprised to do well because I'm heavy and I don't usually sail have boatspeed in light air. I think the difference today was good starts and avoiding bunch-ups at the marks. I seemed to have good speed upwind, and I believe I passed boats because I paid attention to leaves and weeds in the water. When I was behind, I looked for opportunities, to sail into the next windshift or puff.

Thanks to Bob and JR for running the race committee. It was a tough day because the wind was shifting, and they had to deal with a couple of general recalls.

The 2006-2007 Frostbite season will begin Sunday November 19

Hello Laser sailors,
The weather is about to turn a little chilly- chance of flurries this weekend! Time to think about Frostbiting:)
The 2006-2007 Frostbite season will begin Sunday November 19. Racing will continue every Sunday through the end of March- except for the following dates- Dec. 24 and Jan 28.
There is no registration fee for SSA members
The registration fee for non-SSA members is $177.00

Registration will open at 12:00 and the first race will be at 1 pm every race day. Races will finish before 3:30 pm or so- often we will be finished by 3 pm. Each day we will have as many races as we reasonably can- 8 is a typical number of races.
Season scores are calculated by the final scores from each days racing. To qualify for the overall series, a competitor must race at least half the season's racing.
Race committee is all volunteer for frostbite, so a schedule will be circulated giving all participants a chance to sign up for duty days. Volunteers receive a scoring credit.
Non-members are free to trailer in and launch from SSA for the days festivities, but boat storage at Severn Sailing Association is for members only.

Rock Hall Yahct Club – Hard Rock Masters Regatta

Rock Hall Yahct Club – Hard Rock Masters Regatta
September 23rd, 2006
15 boats participated in the RHYC Hard Rock Masters Regatta this past Saturday and once again Rock Hall put together a great event. The forecast had been calling for a solid 20 knots of breeze with gusts to 30 knots, which no-doubt put a hamper on attendance. At the crack of dawn Saturday morning I shamelessly pulled out my radial rig (heavy air insurance policy) and headed for Maryland’s Eastern Shore. When I arrived I wasn’t surprised to hear the big topic of discussion being which rig folks were going to use – full, radial, or 4.7. You see, in Laser masters sailing you can pick any one you want without penalty.
I was kindly reminded by a number of more senior folks that at 38 years old and 170 pounds, I might as well head home with my tail between my legs if I was going to even consider using a radial rig; being the youngest in the group I better suck it up and deal with it. That being established I got ready to go racing.
I’m never a good judge of what the breeze is actually blowing, but I would guess that at the start of the first race we were up against a good 18 knots of breeze. A few boats flipped during pre-start maneuvering, but for the most part everyone was under control. The race committee had set up a fairly long windward-leeward-windward course that kept up busy for about 45 minutes. Mike Schmidt (Magothy River SA) showed exceptional speed and agility and ran away with the first race. Race two was again a breezy one and a few new faces started to show up at the front of the fleet. Chris Fisher (West River SC) had the wheels rolling really well upwind, as did Nicholas Place (Rock Hall YC) with both finishing 3rd or 4th , and Schmidt again taking 1st place.
About halfway up the first beat in race 3 the wind started to drop off – though the results were still the same with Schmidt taking 1st place, followed by Ted Morgan (Severn Sailing) in 2nd. At the start of race 4 the breeze had dropped to below 10 knots. Shifting gears was critical at this point. Morgan was able to pull into the lead downwind to take the gun. After 4 hours of sailing the race committee decided to call it a day. They had done a fantastic job! Mike Schmidt won the regatta for what I believe was the 3rd time. Congratulations Mike for sailing flawlessly. Nice job!
Others notables in attendance included Roger Link (West River SC), Rich Parolski (Rock Hall YC via Ocean City, MD), Robert Danforth (Potomac River SA), Jane Schmidt (Magoth River SA), Jim Knab (Cooper River), Richard Plunkett (Marsh Creek SC), and Bob Tan (Severn Sailing). My apologies for not listing everyone – I’m getting old and don’t have the results sheet memorized.
Several folks used radial rigs and for the most part I would agree that it was clearly the right choice, especially given the forecast. Upwind in breeze over 15 knots these folks had very good speed regardless of whether they weighed 150 pounds or 180 pounds. Downwind they suffered a little bit from a lack of horsepower – especially the bigger folks.
On a side note, the other neat trick about masters sailing is the scoring system. Essentially it handicaps racing based on your age. The younger you are, the more points you get added to your score. If you are an apprentice (35-44) add 3 points to your finish in each race. If you are a master (45-54) add 2 point to your finish in each race. Grand masters (55-64) get 1 point added and great grand masters (65+) are fortunate enough not to have any points added to their scores.
It’s a great system for leveling the playing field. If you haven’t participated in a masters event, consider adding one to your regatta schedule in 2007.
Overall results:
1. Mike Schmidt (M) 16 points
2. Ted Morgan (A) 19 points
3. Nicholas Place (M)
1st Female – Jane Schmidt
1st Grand Master (55-64) – Terry Clarence 31 points
1st Master (45-54) – Mike Schmidt 16 points
1st Apprentice (35-44) – Ted Morgan 19 points
Complete results should be posted shortly at http://www.rockhallyc.org/Results.htm
Past Winners:
2006 – Mike Schmidt
2005 – Mike Schmidt
2004 – John MacCausland
2003 – Terry Clarence

2001 -
2000 – Mike Waters

SSA Laser Fall Series

Thanks to all of you that came out and participated in the SSA Laser Fall Series on Sunday. It was a bit of a frustrating day due to the light & variable conditions and powerboat chop. (A sure sign that the gas prices have dropped!) Hopefully the conditions will be better this Sunday.
Sunday September 24th - the exciting conclusion of the SSA Fall Series. Registration at 8:30 (only for those who did not already register last week) and skippers meeting at 9:30.
Come out and play!
This Sunday will also be a great opportunity to sign up for the Crab Claw Regatta! Sat. September 30 and Sun. October 1 at Severn Sailing Association. Just find me or Tip Clifton and we will be happy to get you signed up. The cut off date for discounted pre-registration is Monday Sept. 25. NOR is available on the Fleet 10 website.

Hard Rock Hall Laser Masters

To all you Laser masters out there....
On Saturday September 23rd Rock Hall Yacht Club will host our annual one day Hard Rock Hall Laser Masters. This is a great time of year to sail on the Chester River as we will have a good chance of great wind and will almost have the bay to ourselves. We have easy beach launching and open water courses that are just a short sail out from the club. The club also has plenty of grass on which to park, rig and camp.

Please see the NOR on our Web site at http://www.rockhallyc.org/2006LaserMastersNOR.htm for additional details.

Like Fishing Bay, if you have groupies, camp followers, devotees, supporters, significant others or hangers-on this is a very spouse-friendly regatta with a full service club house and an exquisite view. The town of Rock Hall is hosting their Fall Fest on the same day so bring guests, get their early, pitch a tent at the club, stay late and make a weekend out of a trip to the Eastern Shore. You can get more information on Fall Fest at http://www.rockhallmd.com/.

Rock Hall YC is easily reached from Hampton, Annapolis/Baltimore/Washington as well as New York/New Jersey. Directions are available on the Rock Hall Web site:

http://www.RockHallYC.org

In all likelihood there will be several large white RHYC signs pointing you in the right direction as you get close to the club.

Please let me know if you need anything, I hope you will join us.

Sincerely,
Nicholas Place
racing@RockHallYC.org
